We head straight up on a grassy rough trail; you will become slower automatically due to the altitude affects. The pass is great for views of some of the world’s most famous mountains.  We’ll spend half an hour on the top of the pass to enjoy the mountain views and take a lot of photographs.  We then descend down carefully in the loose, black pebbly trails before getting down to the grassy meadows.  We cross the Khumbhu glacier and then after a final climb we reach Lobuche.

Kalapathar is one of the best sunrise viewpoints with the closest Mountain above 8000m. All Everest ranges can be seen from here. After sunrise view, we back down to Gorakshep, have breakfast and all the way descent to Lobuche to get to Dzongla, we head straight down along the west ridge of Khumbhu glacier, then head up to the ridges towards the Lobuche peak.  Eventually we reach the flat meadows of Dzongla.  We spend the night here before heading to yet another famous and adventurous pass of the Everest Region.

We keep on ascending towards the west of Dzongla until we reach the top of Chola pass (5428 m).  Most of the time the top of Chola pass is covered in snow, with the added prayer flags; this leaves us with a picturesque landscape superb for photographs.  After half an hour in this windyare, we start very carefully down the steep descent towards the base of Chugimala (another name of Chola pass). The trail then ascends up and down in the basin of Cholatse before we head down the final steep section through the gorge to Thangnak.

We keep on ascending slowly and steadily once more to get the top. After the final steep ascent up a rocky trail, our hard work is rewarded with mountain views of Cho Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Twache and other nearby peaks.  After many photos up at the pass, we descend slowly and carefully down steps to Lungden. This beautiful alpine valley is a trade route for Tibetan yak caravans heading to Namche Bazaar. Rocky spires and glaciers loom beautifully above, often with wispy fast-moving clouds against a blue-blue sky.

We might encounter freshly immigrated Tibetan trader encampments along the way, giving you an amazing insight into the lifestyle of these people before the Tibetan Nomads turned in to brave Mountaineers.  We head up to the Thame Gompa, a picturesque monastery set amongst the many homes of lamas and local people. It’s perched on the side of a hill overlooking the valley. This is the site for the spring celebration of the Mani Rimdu festival, held about the middle of May each year.
