Tour Itinerary
Day 01: Chengdu – Kangding
Drive from Chengdu to Kangding (approx. 4 hours). After arrival, enjoy a light acclimatization walk on the hills behind Kangding, gradually ascending towards 4,000 meters to help your body adapt to the altitude. After the walk, descend back to town and check in to your hotel.
Overnight: Hotel in Kangding (2,600m)
Day 02: Kangding – Gyazela Camp
After breakfast, take a short drive (approx. 40 minutes) to the trailhead at 3,500m, where the trek officially begins. The trail follows a river through pine forests with surrounding mountain views. You will pass a distinctive red rock slide, including a short steep section, before the valley opens into more expansive alpine scenery.
Arrive at Gyazela campsite (3,800m) in the afternoon.
Trekking distance: ~9 km
Overnight: Camping
Day 03: Gyazela – Upper Riwuqi
As altitude increases, today’s walk becomes more demanding but remains scenic. The trail continues gently along the river before gradually ascending. On clear days, enjoy impressive views of Little Gongga, Jiazi Peak, and Mount Grosvenor.
A final uphill section leads to the Riwuqi campsite (4,100m)—a wide alpine pasture at the end of the valley.
Trekking distance: ~7 km
Overnight: Camping
Day 04: Upper Riwuqi – Reddomain Camp
(18 km / approx. 10 hours)
This is the most challenging yet most spectacular day of the trek. After breakfast, hike toward the stunning Reddomain Glacier Lake, located at the foot of Mt. Reddomain (6,112m). The turquoise glacier lake lies at 4,400m and is often used as a climbers’ base camp. After a short rest and photography session, continue toward Riwuqi Pass.
The ascent to the pass is strenuous, so a slow and steady pace is essential. From the Riwuqi Pass (4,850m)—the highest point of the trek—you are rewarded with sweeping views of Jiazi Peak, Mount Grosvenor, Little Gongga, Reddomain, Daddomain, and many surrounding peaks.
Descend no later than early afternoon to reach Reddomain Camp (3,900m) at the western base of Mt. Reddomain, with views of nearby glaciers.
Overnight: Camping
Day 05: Reddomain Camp – Yulongxi Village
(14 km / approx. 8 hours)
Wake up to sunrise lighting the glaciers of the Minya Konka range. After breakfast, trek over Yulongxi Pass, enjoying panoramic views of major peaks including Mt. Gongga, Reddomain, Sechu Longba, Doge Longba, Daddomain, and many others.
After reaching the pass, descend into Yulongxi Valley and continue to Yulongxi village. Another physically demanding but extremely rewarding day.
Overnight: Local guesthouse / lodge
Day 06: Yulongxi – Langgatso Lake – Gongga Gompa
(5 km + 7 km / approx. 8 hours)
Today’s trek is divided into two scenic sections.
Morning:
After breakfast, walk to the trailhead of Langgatso Lake and begin the ascent. The lake hike covers 3.5 km, rising from 4,000m to 4,500m. Langgatso is one of the most photogenic lakes in the region, surrounded by peaks of the western Minya Konka range. Horse riding is available for those who prefer not to walk this section. After time at the lake, return to the base.
Afternoon:
Drive to Zimei Village, then begin the second hike. Descend to the river, cross a bridge, and climb a steep trail that gradually widens and becomes lined with colorful Tibetan prayer flags. This spiritual path leads to Gongga Gompa, a remote Kagyu monastery historically used as a base camp for Minya Konka expeditions.
From the monastery, enjoy outstanding views of Mount Gongga (7,556m), the highest peak in Sichuan and the easternmost 7,000-meter mountain in the world. If conditions allow, visit the temple and witness the mountain glowing golden at sunset.
Overnight: Monastery guesthouse
Day 07: Explore Minya Konka Base Camp
A full-day trek to explore the Minya Konka Base Camp area for close-up views of glaciers and surrounding peaks. From Gongga Gompa, descend to the valley floor and follow a glacier-fed stream upward. The trail is rocky and demanding, especially in the first half.
Reach the old and new base camps of Mt. Nama (5,588m) between 4,000–4,200m, where the scenery opens dramatically. Enjoy views of Minya Konka, glaciers, and high alpine terrain before returning the same way.
Wildlife sightings are possible, including ibex, and with luck, even red pandas.
Trekking distance: ~14 km (round trip)
Overnight: Monastery guesthouse
Day 08: Gongga Gompa – Shangmuju – Xinduqiao
Retrace the trail from the monastery back toward Tsemed Village, completing a short trek of approximately 3 hours. Transfer by local vehicle to Shangmuju, passing Tsemed Pass for panoramic views of Mount Gongga.
Continue by vehicle to Xinduqiao (approx. 3 hours) and check in to a modern hotel. Enjoy a well-earned hot shower and relaxation.
Overnight: Hotel in Xinduqiao
Day 09: Xinduqiao – Chengdu
Drive back to Chengdu (approx. 6–7 hours). Stop for lunch en route. Arrival in Chengdu is usually between 4:00–5:00 PM, where the tour concludes.
