About the difficulty

  • Overall the trip is of moderate difficulty (2.5 stars out of 5). The Kjeragbolten hiking day demands the most fitness and mountain-walking ability. It suits outdoor enthusiasts who exercise regularly and have hiking experience.
  • The four trails each feel different: Pulpit Rock is about 8 km with 470 m of ascent, mostly stone steps and rock surfaces; Trollpikken is about 5 km with 150 m of ascent, the easiest day; Kjeragbolten is about 11 km with 800 m of total ascent and around 7 hours of walking, with some steep slopes needing fixed chains — the most physically demanding day; Trolltunga is done over two days to reduce the strain of a single out-and-back, but you still cross loose stones, streams and possibly remaining snow, and carry your own overnight items and your share of the food.
  • We recommend gradually increasing long-distance walking, hill climbing and trail hiking before departure. If you have a marked fear of heights, old knee or ankle injuries, or any other health condition that could affect hiking, please tell us in advance.
  • Photos on the rocks are taken only if safe and if you wish; there is no need to stand on an overhanging rock to complete the trip.

 Trip Highlights

01 The Ultimate Norwegian Fjord Trekking Route

This trip covers almost every core experience Norwegian fjord trekking has to offer — from the fjord’s surface to kilometer-high cliffs, an ultimate encounter with nature and adventure.

02 Conquer All Four Legendary Norwegian Rocks in One Trip

The openness of Pulpit Rock, the seclusion of Trollpikken, the suspended wonder of Kjeragbolten, the tension of Trolltunga — each summit is a different visual and psychological experience.

03 A Well-Balanced Pace of Trekking and Travel Days

Carefully alternating trekking days with transfer days — Trolltunga in particular is split across two days — lets you reach each stunning destination while still enjoying the walking itself.

04 Sunrise, Sunset and a Sky Full of Stars, All to Yourself atop Trolltunga

Spend the night at the top of Trolltunga, away from the daytime crowds, with the fjord’s sunrise and sunset and a nearly light-pollution-free night sky all your own — a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

05 Fjord Cruise × Trekking — A Complete Experience

Enter the fjord from the water, then look down on it from above — combining a boat cruise with trekking gives you a full, three-dimensional understanding of the fjord.

06 Private minibus throughout, professional guides, a small-group experience

Groups of 6–14 people, led by professional, experienced guides — a deeper experience, and a safer, more flexible and comfortable trip.

TOUR ITINERARY

We recommend arriving one day before the trip to allow sufficient time to rest and prepare for the adventure.

Please check the recommended flight details, arrival meeting point, and meetup arrangements with SGTREK before making any flight bookings or travel arrangements.

DAY 1 Gathering in Stavanger

Arrive in Stavanger, Norway, and check in to your hotel. As the meeting point for this trip, this harbor city gives easy access to the fjord region and is a good place to slow down and settle into the local rhythm before we set off.

Those who arrive early can stroll through the harbor and the old town on their own. Wander the lanes between white wooden houses, have a coffee by the harbor, watch the boats come and go, and enjoy small-town life on Norway’s west coast.

In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner with your guide and fellow trekkers. The guide will present each day’s route and hiking pace and check everyone’s gear once more, so you are ready for the days ahead.

Meals: Breakfast (own expense), lunch (own expense), dinner (included)

Hotel: 4-star hotel, twin room

DAY 2 Pulpit Rock Hike

After breakfast, drive to the Pulpit Rock trailhead.

First you cross scrub, stone-slab paths and scattered lakes — then, without warning, the huge rock platform opens up in front of you. Standing at the edge of a 604 m sheer cliff, Lysefjord unrolls below your feet like a blue ribbon. The impact of this moment cannot be captured in photos or words; only standing there lets you understand its grandeur and scale. Pulpit Rock is the perfect opening to the whole journey.

After resting and taking photos on the platform, return the way you came. Today is both the first hike of the trip and a chance to get used to mountain trails and the team’s rhythm. Afterwards, drive back to Stavanger for dinner and rest.

Transport: Private minibus, approx. 2 hours in total

Trek: Approx. 8 km, +/-470 m, approx. 4–4.5 hours

Meals: Breakfast (included), lunch (own expense), dinner (own expense)

Hotel: 4-star hotel, twin room

DAY 3 Trollpikken, a World Geological Heritage Site

In the morning, first visit Stavanger’s landmark, the Sverd i fjell (Swords in Rock) monument, then set off to hike to Trollpikken.

Trollpikken is known as a “hidden gem”, tucked away in the Magma Geopark: a natural stone pillar about 80 m high. The trail first crosses tundra and glacial remains, and about an hour of gentle walking brings you to this secret place.

It is not as dramatic and showy as the other three rocks. It has a lonely kind of beauty — a pale grey granite pillar surrounded by boulders left by the Ice Age, like a garden on another planet.

After the hike, drive to a mountain hotel. Rest with a swim and a sauna to prepare for the challenge of Kjeragbolten.

Transport: Private minibus, approx. 3 hours in total

Trek: 5 km, +/-150 m, approx. 2.5 hours

Meals: Breakfast (included), lunch (own expense), dinner (included)

Hotel: 3-star hotel, twin room (with sauna and swimming pool)

DAY 4 Kjeragbolten Hike and Fjord Ferry

After breakfast, drive to the Kjeragbolten trailhead.

Today’s route crosses rugged, undulating rocky mountain terrain with continuous ups and downs; some steep sections require fixed chains.

The route ends at a boulder wedged between two rock walls, with the Lysefjord a thousand meters below. The appeal lies not only in the rock itself but also in the alpine terrain and open views along the way. Climbing onto the rock for a photo is optional — your guide will advise based on conditions, and you are welcome to enjoy the view from a safe spot nearby.

After the hike, a Lysefjord ferry takes you onto the water to admire the towering rock walls and the coastline. After a day on the mountain, sitting on the boat in the sea breeze while the fjord slowly unfolds beside you is a different, relaxing experience. After the ferry, drive to the hotel.

Transport: Private minibus, approx. 3 hours in total

Trek: 11 km, +/-800 m, approx. 7 hours

Meals: Breakfast (included), lunch (own expense), dinner (own expense)

Hotel: 4-star hotel, twin room

DAY 5 North along a World-Class Fjord Road

After breakfast, leave Stavanger and head north along a scenic road, passing Odda on the way to Tyssedal, the gateway to Trolltunga. Today is mainly a transfer day, giving your legs a rest while you enjoy Norwegian scenery away from the hiking trails.

The road runs between mountains and the water, passing fjords, lakes, waterfalls, villages and farmhouses. We stop at suitable places so you can get out and enjoy the views.

Arrive in Tyssedal and check in to your hotel. After dinner, pack the gear you will need for the night on the summit and get an early night to save energy for the next two days of hiking.

Transport: Private minibus, approx. 4–5 hours in total

Meals: Breakfast (included), lunch (own expense), dinner (own expense)

Hotel: 3-star hotel, twin room (with sauna and outdoor hot tub)

DAY 6 Trolltunga and a Night on the Summit

After breakfast, meet the staff and start the Trolltunga hike (hiking poles can be lent to you that day if needed).

The route crosses undulating mountain rock; as you gain height and distance, views of the distant ridges and the lake below gradually open up.

We first reach a Nordic glass cabin, where you can enjoy hot drinks, Norwegian snacks and a taste of a local Norwegian drink.

After a short rest, once the crowds have left, we continue to Trolltunga. This cliff jutting out from the mountain wall is the key destination of the trip. From the surrounding viewing area you can take in the full scene of the cliff, the fjord and the mountains.

After the viewing, return to camp for dinner in the mountains. Splitting this route over two days gives us time to rest and to experience the mountain environment beyond the daytime hike. When weather and season allow, you can enjoy the lake and rock walls in the evening light.

Trek: 14 km, +750 m, -420 m, approx. 6 hours

Meals: Breakfast (included), lunch (own expense), dinner (included)

Hotel: Summit glass star-gazing cabin (6 people per room)

DAY 7 Finishing the Trolltunga Hike

Wake up at the glass cabin camp and enjoy the morning in the mountains. After breakfast, pack your gear and start the descent. After the previous day’s hike, keep a steady pace on the way back and take special care on rock surfaces and uneven sections. (If you would like to return to Trolltunga in the early morning, your guide can arrange it depending on weather, the group’s condition and the rest of the schedule.)

After the descent, return to Tyssedal, then drive to Haugesund and check in to a comfortable hotel. At dinner, look back on the journey with your fellow trekkers, celebrate completing the four-rock fjord trek, and close the trip on a warm note.

Transport: Private minibus, approx. 2.5 hours in total

Trek: 8/14 km, +200 m, -600 m, approx. 3.5–5 hours

Meals: Breakfast (included), lunch (own expense), dinner (included)

Hotel: 4-star hotel, twin room

DAY 8 Return to Stavanger

After breakfast, drive from Haugesund back to Stavanger, taking one last look at the grand waterfronts and quiet villages of Norway’s west coast. We expect to arrive around noon, ending the 8-day, 7-night Norway fjord-rocks journey.

From the wide views on Pulpit Rock to the racing heart in front of Kjeragbolten; from the quiet wilderness of Trollpikken to the mountain night at Trolltunga — over eight days we have walked up to four extraordinary rocks on foot, and packed the fjords, the mountains and the memories of our companions into our bags.

Friendly reminder: for return flights or other onward transport, please leave ample time for connections based on the final drop-off point and arrival time, and check with us before buying tickets.

Transport: Private minibus, approx. 2.5 hours in total

Meals: Breakfast (included), lunch (own expense)

Travel Information

What is the weather like

  • June to September is the best season for fjord hiking in southwest Norway.
  • June: about 10–16°C, the longest daylight, with midnight sun. Snowmelt feeds plentiful waterfalls; snow may remain at altitude; big difference between morning and evening temperatures.
  • July: about 12–20°C, lush green mountains, the warmest period, but showers, mountain mist and sudden cooling are still possible.
  • August: about 13–20°C, still green with summer, daylight gradually shortening, with noticeably cooler mornings and evenings at the end of the month.
  • September: about 10–16°C, the mountains gradually take on autumn colors, the weather turns cooler, and there are far fewer people than in peak season — quieter.
  • Whatever the month, the weather on Norway’s west coast changes very quickly, so always bring windproof, waterproof and warm gear.

What gear do I need

  • Focus your gear on being windproof and waterproof, layered for warmth, non-slip and durable:
  • Clothing: quick-dry or thin merino base layer, fleece or light down insulating layer, windproof and waterproof jacket and trousers; also quick-dry trousers, a warm hat, gloves and a buff.
  • Footwear: waterproof hiking boots that you have already broken in, preferably mid- or high-cut with good support, and several pairs of hiking socks.
  • Backpack: a hiking pack of 30 liters or more, with a rain cover.
  • Hiking items: a rain jacket (not a disposable poncho), trekking poles (can be lent at Trolltunga), headlamp, insulated bottle or hydration bladder, sunscreen, sunglasses, energy snacks; knee supports if needed.
  • Personal items: regular medication, blister plasters, toiletries, slippers, power bank and a European plug adapter. Light sleepers should bring earplugs and an eye mask.
  • Large luggage is transported by vehicle; on hiking days you carry only what you need for the day. On the night at the Trolltunga summit camp you also carry overnight items and the food distributed by your guide (about 1.5 kg). A detailed gear list will be provided before departure.

Which visa do I need

  • Norway is in the Schengen area. Guests holding passports from EU countries, the USA, Canada, Singapore or Malaysia, or Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan passports, can travel to Norway visa-free for short stays. Guests with a valid Schengen-country residence permit generally need no extra visa with a valid passport and residence document. Please check your documents and permitted length of stay in advance.
  • If you hold an ordinary mainland China passport without a valid Schengen visa, since Norway is the main destination of this trip you should apply for a Norwegian Schengen tourist visa. If you have travel plans in other Schengen countries, the country of application should be determined from your full itinerary.
  • Visa applications can be submitted up to 6 months before departure. We recommend preparing and booking an appointment early to leave room for later arrangements.
  • After you complete the online deposit booking, we will provide an itinerary and an invitation letter for guests who need a visa, to make the application smoother.

What insurance should I buy

  • Before departure you must buy travel insurance that covers the whole trip, applies in Norway and covers hiking below 3,000 m. The highest point of this trip is about 1,100 m.
  • Your insurance should at least cover medical expenses, emergency rescue, medical transport and emergency repatriation. We also suggest considering personal liability, visa refusal, trip cancellation, and loss of luggage and personal belongings.
  • If you rely on travel insurance bundled with a credit card, please check in advance with the issuing bank or insurer the territory, the hiking activities covered, the coverage amount and conditions, and keep your insurance proof, proof of payment for the trip and the emergency assistance number to hand.
  • Please submit valid proof of travel insurance before the trip starts, making sure it covers the whole trip. (If you need help, contact Horizon customer service.)

How are photos taken during the trip used

  • We respect each participant’s privacy and image rights, and follow the principles of respect, transparency and non-intrusiveness when taking and using material.
  • Photos and videos from the trip are mainly used as team keepsakes, for sharing, and for brand promotion on our website and social media, so that more people can discover the charm of hiking in Europe.
  • Public display focuses on natural scenery, hikers seen from behind and group activities; we do not deliberately highlight individual faces or show private content. If you do not want to be photographed or have your image used publicly, tell your trip leader before departure or during the trip and we will respect your wishes.
  • All images are used only for the purposes above and are stored and used with care; they are never sold, rented or otherwise handed to third parties for other uses.
