Guides & Porters on Mount Kilimanjaro
Your guides and porters are the backbone of a successful Kilimanjaro expedition. While your determination and mindset are crucial, the support team is what makes your climb safe, organized, and achievable.
Qualified & Experienced Guides
Guides are compulsory for all Kilimanjaro routes.
Our treks are led by highly trained and certified guides, registered with the Kilimanjaro National Parks Board.
Each guide has been carefully selected for their experience, safety record, and excellent client feedback.
With over 14,000 successful summits guided, our team has contributed to a 96%+ summit success rate.
Your guide will be your leader, advisor, and motivator throughout the climb — from the first step to the summit, and safely back down.
Support Staff Ratios
We maintain one of the best guide-to-climber and porter ratios on the mountain:
3–4 porters per hiker
2 guides for every 4 hikers
This ensures you receive proper assistance, safety oversight, and comfort at every stage of the climb.
Porters & Camp Support
Porters carry your gear and supplies (up to 15kg per climber).
They trek ahead to set up camp, so your tent, drinking water, and warm meals are ready when you arrive.
Our mountain cooks prepare freshly made, nourishing meals — often exceeding climbers’ expectations.
Tip: A soft duffel bag is preferred, as porters balance loads on their heads and shoulders.
Tipping Guidelines
Tipping is a long-standing tradition on Kilimanjaro and an important way to support the hardworking crew. We recommend giving tips to the head guide, who will fairly distribute them to the team.
Suggested Tip Per Group Per Day:
Chief Guide – US $20/day
Assistant Guide – US $20/day
Cook – US $15/day
Porter – US $10/day
⚠️ Do not distribute tips until you and all gear have safely descended from the mountain.
Typical Crew Breakdown
Here’s an example of the support team based on group size:
1 Climber → 1 Guide / 6 Porters / 1 Cook
2 Climbers → 1 Guide / 1 Assistant Guide / 8 Porters / 1 Cook
3–4 Climbers → 2 Guides / 12 Porters / 1 Cook
5 Climbers → 2 Guides / 1 Assistant Guide / 15 Porters / 1 Cook
✅ With this professional and dedicated crew, your only focus will be to enjoy the climb, stay strong, and summit successfully!
